Certified diamonds
“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” sang Marilyn Monroe.
How can you blame her?
After all, a diamond is forever and its natural hardness has always been described by poets as an emblem of eternal and lasting love.
In fact, on the Mohs scale, a particular classification of mineral hardness, diamond has a hardness equal to 10; the maximum, in substance.
To determine the value of a diamond, four factors must be taken into account, which in English are called “the four C”:
- Carat = Weight
- Colour = Colour
- Clarity = Purity
- Cut = Cut
The weight of a diamond is measured in carats, and one carat weighs 0.2 grams. Obviously, the more carats a diamond has, so the heavier it is, the more value it has.
The colour of a diamond also affects the final economic valuation of the diamond; the G.I.A., again, has codified a very precise colour scale: it starts from the letter D, i.e. colourless, to the letter Z, i.e. light yellow. Obviously, the less colour a diamond has, the rarer and more valuable it is considered to be.
The clarity of a diamond means how many inclusions, i.e. how many small foreign bodies, a diamond has inside it. To make this assessment, a scale approved by the G.I.A. (Gemological Institute of America) is used.
The cutting of the diamond serves to make the light reflect on the diamond and, therefore, to make it more brilliant; the G.I.A., has established a classification to determine the quality of the cut of the diamond: from excellent, that is excellent, to poor, that is mediocre. There are many types of cut, including heart cut, drip cut and, the most common, round or brilliant cut, where the diamond is presented with a minimum of 57 facets (58 if you count also the table).
To prove the authenticity of a given diamond, a certification will always be left in which are reported Cut, Color, Purity and Weight.
The most widespread certificates in Italy are two:
- HRD
- IGI
There is also a third type of certificate, the GIA, but it is mainly used in America.
The HRD issues three types of certification: the first one proves authenticity, thus excluding the possibility that it is a synthetic stone; the other one describes the characteristics of the diamond, i.e., for example, color, carat and size; the last one is the HRD identification report.
IGI also proves the authenticity of the diamond, but sealing it in a blister and laser engraving on the belt the identification code of the diamond, thus added value to the customer.
Here at Fabio Ferro i Gioielli, you will find only natural diamonds with the relevant certifications that you can find inside each well sealed blister.
Let yourself be swept away by their Brilliance.
